How Do You Train an Elephant?

Perhaps you have heard about elephants that can paint pictures or play musical instruments. They seem able to learn how to do everything except speak. Have you ever thought about what methods trainers use to get these huge animals to perform this way? Although elephants are very intelligent, they are still wild animals, after all.

First of all, an elephant knows the difference between a kind person and a mean one. The best trainers are able to imagine themselves in the elephant's place. They realize that the better they understand the animal, the better teachers they will be. They are always gentle with the animals and prefer to encourage them to do things instead of forcing them.

Some trainers use a system that involves giving the animal a treat, such as an apple, whenever it does what it is asked to do. One advantage of this strategy is that it helps the elephant feel comfortable with its trainer. When an elephant does something wrong, a good trainer thinks, "How would elephants treat each other in this situation?" Sometimes the answer is to use force, but to use it properly and as gently as possible.

Tornado Safety Information

Most tornadoes occur in the middle of the United States in an area known as Tornado Alley. However, these terrifying storms happen in every part of the world, except for Antarctica. So how can you protect yourself from a tornado?

Tornado Warnings
You should rely on your local radio and television stations for information about potentially destructive storms. A tornado 'watch' means there is the potential for a tornado to form. A tornado 'warning' means that someone has already seen one. It's time to find a safe place to hide right away.

Safe Places to Hide
If you are not in a building, get inside one as quickly as possible. Go to the lowest floor and find a safe place. Try to find a hallway or a room with no windows, like a closet or a bathroom. At the height of a storm, the winds may be blowing at up to 320 miles per hour, and broken glass is capable of doing a lot of damage.

After the Storm
When the tornado has passed, turn on your radio for instructions. Don't try to move anyone who is hurt; call for skilled medical help. As you leave the building, watch for fallen electrical lines and broken glass.

Who Was King Khufu?

King Khufu was the leader, or pharaoh, of Egypt who governed his country from 2589 to 2566 B.C. He ordered the building of the largest structure in the world at that time, the Great Pyramid at Giza. It is almost 150 meters tall and was completed around 2560 B.C. Experts say that it is made up of about 2.3 million stone blocks. No one is absolutely sure, but apparently it took about 23 years to complete. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that is still standing today. It was also the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years.

Khufu also played an important role in helping to strengthen Egypt. In order to build the Great Pyramid, he got thousands of ordinary Egyptians to come to Giza to work on it. He also made the people of Giza give food, water, and beer to the visiting workers. The building of the pyramid brought together large groups of people from all over the country for the first time. Building the pyramid became Egypt's most important job---something everyone could be proud of. This helped to unite the people and strengthen the country.

Captain Bellamy and the Whydah

Captain Sam Bellamy was a poor sailor who lived in Eastham, Massachusetts, in the United States. He was in love with a young woman, Maria Hallett, but her family didn't think he would make a good husband. They felt his income was too little to support a wife and family. To make more money, he went looking for ships that had sunk. But he couldn't find any, and this transformed his ideas about making money. He decided to become a pirate, stealing from ships in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. He and his men soon targeted more than 50 ships.

In February 1717, Bellamy took a large ship called the Whydah from its English owners. It was filled with gold and silver worth 20,000 English pounds. The money would be divided equally among the other men, with Bellamy getting a larger share. Back then the average income for a sailor was two pounds a month. Even though there were 145 men in Bellamy's crew, all of them would be rich. "We have enough," Bellamy is said to have told his men. "It's time to go home." But in April 1717, the ship sank in a storm, and only two men in Bellamy's crew survived.
