How Do You Train
an Elephant?
Perhaps you have heard about elephants that can paint
pictures or play musical instruments. They seem able to learn how to do
everything except speak. Have you ever thought about what methods trainers use
to get these huge animals to perform this way? Although elephants are very
intelligent, they are still wild animals, after all.
First of all, an elephant knows the difference between
a kind person and a mean one. The best trainers are able to imagine themselves
in the elephant's place. They realize that the better they understand the
animal, the better teachers they will be. They are always gentle with the
animals and prefer to encourage them to do things instead of forcing them.
Some trainers use a system that involves giving the
animal a treat, such as an apple, whenever it does what it is asked to do. One
advantage of this strategy is that it helps the elephant feel comfortable with
its trainer. When an elephant does something wrong, a good trainer thinks,
"How would elephants treat each other in this situation?" Sometimes
the answer is to use force, but to use it properly and as gently as possible.

Rock Climbing
Just 90 miles to the north of New York City, U.S.A.,
lies the Shawangunk Mountains. The mountains, known as the 'Gunks', are 12
miles long and 300 feet high. The extreme sport of rock climbing is a very
popular activity there. Many people from around the region and abroad make
trips to the Gunks to climb the mountains. The Gunks have become one of the
major rock climbing areas of North America. There are about 1,200 climbing
routes, and visitors to the Gunks get to enjoy wonderful views.
However, most rock climbers are not so interested in
the views. Like mountain climbers, they go up the sides of mountains. But the
rock climbers seem to want the climb to be especially difficult. They choose to
climb only the parts that look like walls. They also pick only areas where
there is a danger of falling thousands of feet to the ground. In addition to
strong legs, rock climbers need a lot of strength in their arms and hands. They
must use small openings in the rock to hold themselves flat against the wall.
It is definitely not a relaxing sport!

Bob Marley:
Music for the World
Despite the fact that he died almost 30 years ago, Bob
Marley is still one of the best-known names in world music. He invented a style
of music called reggae, and his recordings are still popular all over
the world today. Marley grew up on the island nation of Jamaica. He began to
play in clubs there when he was 18. In 1980, near the end of his life, he
traveled around Europe with his group, Bob Marley and the Wailers. These
performances attracted the largest audiences of any musical act in Europe at
that time.
Marley's music was a lively combination of Jamaica's
African music and American blues music. His first songs talked about the
difficulties faced by people living in the poorest neighborhoods in Jamaica.
These songs were especially popular with young people who wanted to help change
things for the better. Throughout his life, this issue was always present in
his work. In his early 20s, Marley joined a religious organization in Jamaica
called the Rastafarians. They believe strongly in human rights for everyone.
From that time on, his Rasta beliefs heavily influenced the way he lived his
life as well the songs he wrote.
