Answers to an
Ancient Mystery
Sixty-five million years ago, almost all of the
dinosaurs on Earth died at the same time. The only ones to survive were the few
dinosaur relatives that could fly. What terrible event caused this? Scientists
have sought the answer for a long time. They are still not completely sure.
However, today there are two popular opinions about this unanswered question.
One group believes that a giant rock hit the area
which is now Mexico. This filled the air with black dust. Skies everywhere
became black, and the sun's light couldn't reach Earth for an extended period
of time. During this time, the climate changed, and many kinds of plants and
animals died. When the skies cleared, the temperature increased too much,
killing even more plants and animals. Dinosaurs could not get the food they
needed, and this caused them to starve to death.
Another group of scientists has a different idea. They
say that, in reality, volcanoes were the problem. Volcanoes are openings in the
earth that emit extremely hot melted rock. This group thinks that 65 million
years ago, a lot of volcanoes started to become active. This caused the climate
change that killed all the dinosaurs. At the moment, the true story remains a
mystery.

Tornado Safety
Information
Most tornadoes occur in the middle of the United
States in an area known as Tornado Alley. However, these terrifying storms
happen in every part of the world, except for Antarctica. So how can you
protect yourself from a tornado?
Tornado Warnings
You should rely on your local radio and television
stations for information about potentially destructive storms. A tornado
'watch' means there is the potential for a tornado to form. A tornado 'warning'
means that someone has already seen one. It's time to find a safe place to hide
right away.
Safe Places to Hide
If you are not in a building, get inside one as
quickly as possible. Go to the lowest floor and find a safe place. Try to find
a hallway or a room with no windows, like a closet or a bathroom. At the height
of a storm, the winds may be blowing at up to 320 miles per hour, and broken
glass is capable of doing a lot of damage.
After the Storm
When the tornado has passed, turn on your radio for
instructions. Don't try to move anyone who is hurt; call for skilled medical
help. As you leave the building, watch for fallen electrical lines and broken
glass.
